Studio Four is thrilled to introduce our very first collection of block prints, rooted in our reverence for this storied textile tradition and a deep love of travel. The designs recall memories of past journeys and pay tribute to destinations from our recent trip to India, where we met with our textile partners.
We worked with master artisans in India to produce the designs utilizing techniques passed down through generations. These artisans are essential to each part of the process—block carving, color mixing, and printing.
Each pattern begins with a hand-carved wooden block, known as a chhapa, for each color of the design. Before printing, the colors are mixed exactingly using earth-friendly pigments. Working color by color, artisans place the block entirely by eye to create the pattern.
Block printing, with its centuries-long history in India, is a technique that thrives in South Asia—not a worldwide practice—making each piece an authentic expression of this tradition. Known for their natural variations in alignment, color, and pattern, block prints draw the eye to these subtle shifts, which represent the extraordinary skill of the craft
